Courses

Music can be learnt at any age and therefore we have options to learn it as an academic course or simply to fine-tune your bathroom singing.  Perhaps you are a professional singer who wants to further fine tune your voice or a mother whose children are now in school, giving you an opportunity to fill your life with some music – either ways, The Academy of Indian Music has something to offer.  In our music section, we currently offer the following:

Vocals: Indian classical music is categorized under two genres – Hindustani and Carnatic.  Broadly speaking, Hindustani developed in the northern regions of the country, while Carnatic music is indigenous to the south.  The Academy of Indian Music offers both.

Hindustani vocal: The two main vocal traditions in Hindustani music are 'dhrupad', the purest of all, without any embellishment and completely      austere in its delivery, and 'khayaal', with a romantic content and elaborate ornamentation. Taught by a gold medalist from India, The Academy offers     both versions of Hindustani vocal music. You can choose everyday or weekend courses. click here for course details

Carnatic vocal:  Carnatic music is considered one of the oldest systems of music in the world.  The basis of Carnatic music is the system of ragas (melodic scales) and talas (rhythmic cycles). There are seven rhythmic cycles and 72 fundamental ragas. All other ragas are considered to have stemmed from these. An elaborate scheme exists for identifying these scales, known as the 72 Melakarta Ragas.  The Academy of Indian Music offers Carnatic vocal lessons at the beginning, intermediate and advance levels.Click here for course details

Instruments:  The Academy of Indian Music also offers options to learn many Indian and western musical instruments, such as Tabla, Veena, the Violin and the keyboard.  Classes are offered at all levels, for all ages.  Students can choose classes that cater to individualized attention as well as group classes.

Indian musical instruments:

Veena:  The veena is an Indian plucked instrument. There are many   major types of veenas, such as the Rudra veena, the Vichitra veena and   the Saraswati Veena.  The Rudra and Vichitra veenas are used in Hindustani music whereas the Saraswati veena is used in Carnatic     classical music.  In fact the Saraswati veena (also spelled Saraswati vina) is named after the Hindu Goddess, Saraswati. The Academy offers Veena courses at Beginners, advance beginners, intermediate and advance levels.Click here for course details

Tabla: An Indian musical instrument, the Tabla can be defined as a pair of     drums.  It consists of a small right hand drum called the ‘dayan’ and a larger metal one called the ‘bayan’. Although the origin of tabla is somewhat obscure, it is generally belived that it evolved from the barrel shaped drum called pakhawaj.  This was about three hundred years ago. The Tabla is now a percussion instrument, both in the Indian as well as the Western world. Taught by a faculty trained in the Ajrada, Delhi and Punjab gharanas of Tabla, the Academy offers tabla courses at beginner and intermediate levels.Click here for course details

Violin:  The violin is a bowed string instrument with four strings tuned in perfect fifths.  It is the smallest and the highest-pitched member of the violin family of string instruments, which also includes the viola and the cello.  The range of the violin extends from G, the lowest open string,    upward nearly four octaves. The strings are tuned a fifth apart at G3 (196     Hz), D4, A4, E5(659.3 Hz). A difficult instrument to master, and considered one of the world’s foremost classical instruments, the violin is the stuff of legends. At The Academy of Indian Music, we offer violin courses by a veteran violinist of pure Carnatic Classic style.Click here for course details
